The new Provost of the College of Humanities at the University of Ghana, Prof. Joseph Awetori Yaro, has met with staff members to discuss his vision for the development of the College. The meeting was held at the R. S. Amegashie Auditorium of the University of Ghana Business School on 19th December 2024. This engagement provided an opportunity for him to outline strategies to position the College as a leader in global academic excellence.

In his address, Prof. Yaro explained the need for bold, innovative, and transformative leadership to embed the core values of integrity, commitment, respect, loyalty, and innovation into the College’s processes, strategies, and operations. He highlighted the importance of creating a vibrant intellectual climate that encourages cutting-edge research and community engagement while promoting academic excellence through adherence to the highest international standards of interactive teaching and learning. He also stressed the need for the College to produce high-quality professionals and impactful knowledge products, co-develop policies and strategies with national, regional, and global significance, and increase revenue to fund infrastructure and operations.

To enhance operations, Prof. Yaro urged staff to work towards achieving the College’s objectives. He promised that their efforts would create a comfortable and rewarding environment with access to incentives. He encouraged staff to prioritise student satisfaction, ensure that students remain happy and engaged throughout their academic journey. He also elaborated on his plan to create a thriving economic environment within the College by providing authentic, credible, and inspiring leadership. He explained the governance structure within the College and encouraged staff members to familiarise themselves with each other for mutual and organisational benefits.

He outlined several key initiatives, including the promotion of an excellent international learning environment to ensure a transformative student experience, resolving challenges faced by Higher Education Research Centres (HERCs) to build responsible citizens through academic programmes, achieving a research-intensive agenda, and establishing a world-class grants management office. He also emphasised the need to decentralise operations, hold inclusive staff meetings, build an efficient and customer-friendly support staff, and improve camaraderie among staff members. A question-and-answer session followed, during which issues of concern were addressed.
