UGBS Student Saves Passenger Mid-Air on KLM Flight

Dr. Joyce Emefa Addo-Klah, a student at the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS), has demonstrated exceptional leadership and professionalism by saving a passenger during a medical emergency onboard KLM Royal Dutch Airlines Flight KL 589 from Amsterdam to Accra on 11th December 2024.

Dr. Addo-Klah, who is pursuing an MSc in Clinical Leadership and Management at UGBS, swiftly responded when a passenger fell ill about four hours into the flight. She immediately retrieved her medical bag and assessed the passenger’s condition. She stabilised the passenger using an injection from the airline’s emergency medical kit. To ensure privacy and calm among other passengers, the patient was moved to the business class section, where Dr. Addo-Klah continued to monitor the condition until the flight landed safely in Accra.

In recognition of her efforts, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines offered Dr. Addo-Klah an onboard reward and a discounted ticket package for her next flight. She was travelling with her husband, an obstetrics and gynaecology specialist, and their son. Dr. Addo-Klah is also the course representative for the UGBS weekend Clinical Leadership and Management programme.

Her actions reflect the values of leadership and service that the University of Ghana Business School strives to instil in its students. The UGBS community celebrates Dr. Addo-Klah for such heroic intervention and dedication to saving lives.
